about me
artist and stone letter cutting specialist
Damian Witty is a stone lettercutter who specialises in creating pieces that embody true creativity, beauty and impact.
He helps his clients to tell their stories, immortalise their memories by carving bespoke lettering that lasts a lifetime. He does this from his workshop in Loughborough where he champions the use of British stones and ancient, traditional methods to demonstrate his skills.
His work has been enjoyed by thousands of people, whether that’s privately and reflectively with his intimate headstone lettering, or appreciated by the wider public, as seen with his work on the Richard III memorial in the centre of Market Bosworth.
He’s proud husband to Tracey, and a lover of good coffee. He likes walks in the countryside with his rescue dog Ivy.
a note from me
Ever since I was at school, I’ve loved the way letters can look. I’ve always been fascinated by headstones, the fonts, the intricacy of the work in the stone and the fact that some of these are hundreds of years old, but the carving still so sharp!
I loved the tales that they told, reading all the stories of the people who had passed, and seeing words laid out so beautifully in such a lasting way, really stuck with me. It was one of the reasons I would eventually study typography, work as a graphic artist and form my own graphic design business, designing and managing projects for clients such as The National Trust, Arts Council England, The Jorvik Viking Centre and English Heritage.
It wasn’t until my wife lovingly, but persistently, booked us both onto a day’s stone carving course in 2010, that I fell in love with the craft. I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed using traditional tools, a dummy (mallet) and chisel, to make such permanent marks in something so incredibly hard. I found it so gratifying to create using only the natural and individual characteristics of stone.
That was it. I was sold, and it became an instant passion.
Now, after 10 years of further training and honing my craft, I spend as much time cutting and carving as I possibly can from my workshop in Loughborough.
I love what I do, hearing the stories of the people I work with and helping them to bring their memories and ideas to life is a true honour.
If you’re interested in creating a long-lasting piece of artwork or a fitting memorial headstone for your loved one, in my opinion, there’s no better medium than stone to use.
I’ll always endeavour to showcase the quality of British stone wherever it fits the brief. We have a wealth of beauty right here in the UK and I’m committed to ensuring that British craftsmanship stays strong and true to its traditional roots.
